Dorm Room Essentials
Dorm Room Essentials: What My Daughter is Packing for University
As my daughter heads off to university, we have been knee-deep in to do lists, shopping trips and packing boxes. It’s an exciting new chapter for her, but also a bittersweet one for me. While she is buzzing with anticipation about her independence and the new chapter she is about to embark on, I am focused on making sure she is going to be comfortable and happy in her dorm.
Dorm rooms are small and a little plain, so the key is bringing in the right mix of practical items and cozy touches. Here is the checklist we have been working through – hopefully it helps if you are preparing your own student for the big move!
-
Bedding & Comfort
-
Twin XL sheets – not the same as twin, be sure to check ahead to confirm the size of the dorm bed, but twin XL seems to be most common
-
Duvet – we are going with a full for extra coverage and comfort
-
Mattress pad encasement – covers just the mattress itself
-
Mattress topper & cover – dorm beds aren’t the most comfortable so adding a topper and then a cover
-
Headboard pillow – acts as a headboard and cushion for lounging
-
Organization & Storage
-
Under-bed storage bins – for extra clothes and shoes that don’t get used as often and don’t need to take up precious closet space
-
Closet organizers – hanging shelves and shoe racks to maximize storage
-
Hooks and command strips – nails are not allowed, so these are essential for hanging photos, artwork etc.\
-
Utility cart – can double as a nightstand, bookcase, extra storage on wheels
-
Study Essentials
-
Desk lamp – with good lighting and charging capability
-
Desk organizer – to coral pens, pencils, highlighters
-
Extension cords
-
Everyday living
-
Mini fridge – include grab and go snacks for late nights and busy mornings
-
Shower caddy – to tote items to and from the bathroom
-
Flip flops – for the communal showers
-
Towels – at least 2 sets
-
Stick vacuum – to keep floors clean
-
Laundry hamper – with removable laundry bag
Once we’ve covered the essentials, we’ll be adding a few thoughtful touches – like a rug, artwork, throw pillows and blankets – to bring in colour, texture, and that cozy, homey vibe that makes a dorm room feel like her own space. As we get ready for move-in day, I remind myself that while she won’t be under my roof, she’s carrying a little piece of home with her. The right essentials make a big difference in turning a plain dorm room into a space that is not only functional, but also warm and welcoming.
If you’re helping your own child head off to university, I hope this list helps you feel more prepared. And if you’ve been through it already, I’d love to know – what was the one thing your student couldn’t live without in their dorm?
